Franz Danzi
Flute Quartet
in D Minor (Op. 56, No. 2)
for Flute and Strings
Franz Ignaz Danzi, cellist and
composer, was born on June 15, 1763 in Schwetzinger, Germany and died on
April 13, 1826 in Karlsruhe, Germany. His father, cellist Innozenz Danzi (1730-1798) was one of the highest paid musicians of the famous Mannheim Orchestra.
Franz began playing cello with that orchestra in 1778, eventually succeeding his father in 1783 (in Munich).
In 1807 Franz became Kapellmeister in Stuttgart where he became good friends with Carl Maria von Weber, 23 years his junior (born 1786 - ironically, Weber died on June 5, 1826, less than 2 months after Danzi).
Danzi composed 4 Flute Concertos:
No. 1 in G Major, Op. 30 (1806)
No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 31 (1806)
No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 42 (1814)
No. 4 in D Major, Op. 43 (1814)
3 Potpourris for Clarinet and Orchestra, Op. 45 (1814) and a Concertante in Bb Major for Flute and Clarinet (and Orchestra) Op. 41 (1814).
In addition, he wrote several Chamber Works for the Flute:
3 Flute Quintets for Flute & Strings, Op. 50 (1818)
3 Flute Quartets for Flute & Strings, Op. 56 (1821)
3 Trios for Flute, Violin & Cello, Op. 7 (1824)
and 9 Woodwind Quintets (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and F Horn), a medium he is often credited with inventing.
Full string sounds (“tutti strings”) have been employed in the smp files
because of the very inferior sounds for solo string used in SmartMusic
since version 9 (the solo string sounds before version 9 were quite good
- far less strident). Also included are “X” versions of the smp files,
which do employ solo string sounds (i.e., solo violin, viola &
cello).
